No Christmas till Thanksgiving…at least
This does not seem like an elaborate request, yet I am finding, even here in Florida, that many simply want to celebrate Christmas whenever they want. This makes little sense.
If you value the “vibes” of Christmas then you would want to restrict them rather than expand them. By expanding them you literally ruin and make them common. This makes celebrating Christmas anti Christmas.
The “vibes” of Christmas are clearly the least important part from a Christian perspective anyway, and the people who enthusiastically decorate before Halloween (the most underrated of Christian holidays) are probably doing it in part because they dislike the “vibes” of Halloween. Which is somewhat understandable since the contemporary celebration of Halloween in the popular imagination is basically just about horror movies.
But it strikes me as incredibly offensive to expand the greatest of Christian holidays to the point where its celebration becomes basically hallmark movie LARPing for months on end. Why even celebrate it at all as Christ Mass if what you’re seeking are Hallmark vibes for three months?
Die Hard Christmas is on the other extreme, where the celebration of the kenosis of God becomes essentially just about coolness. At least Lethal Weapon has deep pathos. As wonderful as Die Hard is from a purely cinematic perspective, it is far too cynical to be about Christ Mass.
Let’s just show some restraint when it comes to these holidays before we accidentally paganism them. Or maybe not so accidentally paganize…
